Zoe’s News Report (literacy)

I wrote this at home. What do you think?
Hello and welcome to Bearwood’s  News with me Amy Hopper.

I am saddened to tell you about yesterday at the Costa Concordia  which had just set sail and had sunk at approximately 9:30.

According to the chairmen they believe that ‘Human error is to blame’,  and they certainly don’t  take responsibility for the incident and they’re  certain that it is the captains fault and not theirs. But according to the captain it is not  his fault and that the rocks weren’t on his map! But he doesn’t have any excuses for abandoning  the ship, And  there is great news to end from the Italian government- Captain Francisco (aged 52) will be in jail for the rest of his life. That’s it for today at Bearwood’s News.

CHELSEA ARE CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE By Harjun and Kyle

CHELSEA ARE CHAMPIONS OF  EUROPE

Chelsea stunned Bayern Munich in a dramatic penalty shoot-out at the Allianz Arena to win the Champions League for the first time.

Thomas Mueller’s late header put Bayern on the brink of victory on home territory but Didier Drogba levelled things up with a bullet header at the death before coolly converting the decisive spot-kick.

The tournament which gave Chelsea their greatest agony when they lost on penalties against Man utd in Moscow has now delivered the greatest glory in their 107-year history.

Juan Mata missed Chelsea’s first penalty but David Luiz, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole were all successful. Philipp Lahm, Mario Gomez and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer were all on target for Bayern.

The momentum shifted decisively when Cech denied Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger hit the post to leave Chelsea on the brink and present Drogba with his moment of destiny.

R.E Funerals in different religions by Simran

I have done some research about what different religions do at funerals like what kind if rituals they do. I found some information and i would love to share it with you so here is some information:

Sikhism:

Sikhs burn their dead. As the body is bathed and clothed in fresh clothes by family members, Sikh prayers are said. The ashes are usually gathered afterwards and put afloat in flowing body of water- returning the person’s last physical remains to nature.

Christianity:

When a christian dies, it is seen as the end of his/her life on earth. A funeral is held for friends and family to grieve for the person who has died and give thanks for their life. If someone is on their deathbed a minister will prepare them for death

Islam:

The Islamic funeral ceromony is dictated by sharia law ( Islamic religious law). cremation and other practices are forbidden, so burial always occours along with very specific ritual process. Purity and cleanliness are a vital part of the Islamic faith.

Topic: Rock & Soils + Minerals by Zoe

A rock is roughly made up of 2 or more minerals. The rocks you see around you- the mountains, the pavement & the riverbeds, are all made of minerals. E.G. : Think of a chocolate chip cookie as a rock!. The  cookie is made out of flour, butter, sugar & chocolate. The cookie is like a rock and the flour, butter, sugar & chocolate are like minerals. You need minerals to make rocks BUT you don’t need  rocks to make  minerals! I know it sounds confusing  but have you ever heard someone say to you or a teacher say to you like you need sand to make glass but you don’t need glass to make sand. It’s because if you  need minerals to make rocks… What are rocks made off? Minerals, so how can rock make minerals? Did you know that : If you were to cut a mineral shape it would be the same tHrough out! There are about 3000 different minerals in the world. Minerals are made of chemicals- either  a single chemical or a combination of chemicals. There are 103 known chemical elements. Minerals are sorted into 8 groups. Some common examples have been listed for each. When rocks break down into smaller & smaller pieces, they turn into sand. If you look at the sand under a microscope, you will see that sand is made up of the same minerals as the rocks that the sand came from. When plants start to sprout up in sand, it is turning from being just small bits of rock to being soil.

Is a crystal minerals and a type of rock?

The answer is yes. Crystals are minerals that have had the chance to grow in the shape that they were meant to be. Just like your DNA determines the colour of your eyes, how tall you will get to be and the shape of your bones, the chemicals that a mineral is made of determines what shape it gets to be. We can tell different minerals apart by what crystal shape they are. Sometimes minerals form in spaces where there is not a lot of room, so they don’t have a crystal shape. When there is just a big hunk of a mineral, it is called a massive mineral. If there is a definite shape with easy to see flat sides, it is called a mineral crystal. Most of the earth’s crystals were formed millions of years ago. Crystals form when the liquid rock from inside the earth cool and harden. Sometimes crystals form when liquids underground find their way into cracks and slowly deposit minerals. Most minerals crystals take thousands of years to “grow” but some like salt (halite) can form so quickly that you can watch them grow at home! Some people think of crystals as clear pretty rocks that are used for jewelry. Amethyst is a very common quartz crystal. Crystals do not have to be clear, but those are the kinds you will usually see in the stores.

Literacy! Directed and Reported Speech.

In literacy we have been learning about directed and reported speech as a starter before learning about news reports. We have looked at how to change direct speech into reported and reported into directed speech.

Here are some examples of different speeches.

1) ” The costa concordia was tilting to the side unexpectedly!” screamed Amy, a passenger on board.

2) One of the waiters on board the costa concordia has claimned that when the ship started to sink the captain was no were to be seen.

Can you change these sentences into a different type of speech ( for example if sentence one was reported speech turn it into direct speech)?

Can you come up with your own sentences and post them as a comment?

Literacy By Zoe & Simran

This week in Literacy we have been learning about the Costa Concordia cruise ship.

Soon we are going to use the green screen to make our own news reports , just like BBC news! But we have to make sure that we are serious and that we have a formal tone so it is realistic. We have been learning loads as well as writing our facts and making them into news reports. Did you know that Captain Francisco  Schettino jumped out into a life boat when there were 4200 passengers and crew members were still on the ship that was sinking?
We think this is terrible because Captains are  supposed to help people evacuate off the ship safely if there is an emergency.

We also learned that  that the captain wanted to boast and do a little salute to another retired captain  who lived on the island where the Concordia hit some rocks. When it hit the rocks all the lights switched of and the captain told a lie in an announcement, saying that it’s just a electrical problem. Then he dived into one of the lifeboats to save himself.
After a while the passengers were told that they should stay calm and that someone was coming to rescue them.  Meanwhile the captain was forced to get back on the ship and help… Before long  all this tragedy ended and when some of the people got safely on to land then found out that eleven  passengers that were on the ship died and two divers pulled out two elderly men  from the bottom of the ship! According to the chairmen of the cruise ship company (boss) ‘Human error is to blame’  and they do not take responsibility for the incident .  The new revelations according to the captain, who said that the rocks weren’t on his map and that he did follow the safety rules. And there is great news to end from the Italian government- Captain Francisco won’t be sailing any more ships for the rest of his life because Francisco is in jail for the rest of his life. We think he deserves it for the tragedy he had  invented when there was no good reason for it.

This is ‘Costa Concordia’ they say it was one of the largest ship these days!.

This is Captain Francisco Schetonio, who is now called the chicken of the sea because of his foolishness for abandoning the ship while it was sinking.

So watch out and keep your eyes for our news reports we might post them on.
