Bearwood museum is open! By Bismah

This afternoon year 4 had some visitors from the Heritage Centre to talk to us about World War 2.We moved around learning about different things and were split into groups. It was very interesting to see all of the objects and talk to people who had lived during the war. They also brought in some objects from WW2 including a real Air -rade siren! All of the objects werenโ€™t fake they were real. The Heritage people told us about how it was like to be an evacuee and to be evacuated. We saw real ration books and Identity cards and lots of photos. Some of the photos were from Bearwood during the war. We saw the clock tower that our school used to have!. Some groups were interviewing them and asking them questions. We really enjoyed it.
Also in year 4 this half term we made a museum about ww2. We split up in groups and researched about different things. The parents have came in to look at our museum exhibit this afternoon. We hope they enjoy it as much as we did making it! We made some mock banana too using parsnips as they didn’t have bananas during the war.

  5. My late mother Sheila Dawson, nรฉe Holtham lived at 26 Marlborough Road from June ’26 to September ’49 when she married and she attended school in Bearwood, then Holly Lodge but she was evacuated to Shropshire in ’39 when she was 13 but returned after 6 weeks and braved out the Blitz with her mother and father. She then attended Oldbury High until she successfully sat her School Certificate examinations and she went on to work as a lab technician at Birmingham University. Her father George William Holtham was a senior workshop manager at Hardy Spicer on the Coventry Road. To get to the point in clearing my mother’s bungalow (in Barton-on-Sea, Hants) I found a “555” cigarette box containing shrapnel and a small piece of aluminium from a German aircraft that she had collected on her walks to school during the Blitz. I remember this box from my childhood when we visited Nana Holtham during the school holidays. Would you be interested in these wartime artifacts for the museum?
